Foto Art by Marthenya
Marthenya, born in Winston-Salem, NC in 1977, is a Georgia resident for over three years. Her photography art portfolio currently consists primarily of still life. She has captured images that could have both metaphoric and literal meaning. While all photos in Marthenya’s portfolio are not a part of a particular series, her current bodies of work are titled Math, Branches, Snow, and Table Top.

Math
is a body of work that expresses her appreciation for mathematics, which she acquired through her studies at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. There, she obtained a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Math is about shapes, symmetry, distance, angles, numeration, measurements, materials and strength.

“I have always loved the fundamentals of math. Not necessarily adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, but more so a natural curiosity about how and why things work and how they fit together, one with another, causing a desired outcome. I destroyed plenty of electronic devices. I would pay a significant amount of attention to just observing the symmetry, or lack thereof, in walls, floors, street lamp posts, whatever. I think that is why I majored in Engineering. I thought that is what I was supposed to be. My sister and high school guidance counselor thought the same. Apparently we were all wrong. Math is also art, in a way.”

~ Marthenya

Branches is a body of work that metaphorically represents growing, reaching, expanding and uniquely customizing ones space in the earth. Table Top is a body of work that was shot on Marthenya’s dining room table. It is about shadows and light. Snow is a body of work that was captured on a very lucky day as such snow days are rare in the South.

Since adolescence, the camera has been a part of my life. First as a way to capture memories and most recently as a form of expression and art. I am an artist.
